The Nature of Hate

Republicans hate Democrats. Christians hate Muslims. And Jews and non-Christians and gays. Muslims hate Americans. Americans hate Big Business, Big Oil, Big Brother, terrorists, taxes and traffic. Kids hate their parents and homework. Dogs hate cats. Cats hate mice. I could do this all day.

Hate is a very strong word; a : intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury b : extreme dislike or antipathy (from Merriam Webster). Personally, I hate mushrooms and spiders. I try to keep my hate simple and reserve it for items that can’t hate me back.

Hating something or someone is the ultimate judgment. You’ve decided that the object of your hate does not deserve your respect or tolerance. I can understand that. I do not tolerate spiders in my house one little bit! But why do I hate them? With the exception of the occasional bite (that really can’t be proven or disproven) they, as a species, have done nothing to me. I hate them because I have an irrational fear of them. I have no idea where this fear comes from nor do I care. All I know is they’re freaking scary and all must die!

My attitude sounds a lot like the current views of a lot of people, doesn’t it? For instance, the Muslim religion is being blamed en masse for the 9/11 attack in NYC. As we know, that attack was actually the fault of a small group of radical extremists that happened to be of the Muslim faith. Now we hate all Muslims due to the fear that one is representative of all. We are still intensely angry nine years later and very fearful that it will happen again. So we’ll drive out all the Muslims and be safe again. Is that rational?

There are also a lot of people who hate the gay community and believe that allowing their marriages to hold the same legal weight as those of straights will weaken that institution. Why do they hate gays? Because of their sexual disposition. And because God says it’s wrong. This is their only argument. But didn’t God also say “judge not lest ye be judged?” and “do onto others as you would have done onto you?” They seem to have a fear that somehow this lifestyle is catching, like a cold, and take personal affront as if they’ve been personally injured by these people. I’d wager that the majority of these haters don’t know any gays at all. Is this rational?

And last, but not least, Mexicans. I’m not going to bother making it pretty by saying illegal immigrants. We all know it’s Mexicans. Or at least people that look like Mexicans. I am against illegal immigration based solely on the fact that it IS illegal. But I understand what it is these people are looking for. The same American dream we were raised to believe was possible. Why are they hated so much? I think it’s because their skin is not white, they don’t speak English, and in most cases they are of low income. They come to our country and yet still have love for their Motherland. Wouldn’t any of we do the same if we became ex-patriots? I keep hearing that they do not pay taxes. I call bull@!$%# on that one. If they get a paycheck, they pay taxes. If they purchase products, they pay taxes. If they register a vehicle, they pay taxes. What personal damage have you suffered at their hands? Is your fear, anger or sense of injury rational?

Hate is rampant in today’s world, just like it has been pretty much since the dawn of time. I believe that the only way world peace will ever come to be is if mankind dies out. I think it’s a pipedream and downright impossible. But I will keep trying to do my part to make it happen. Because even though I do have hate in my heart I also have love and an overwhelming desire to be proven wrong.

Spiders eat more pest bugs than bats, just saying.. Now cats....

Hate and fear, the two biggest byproducts of ignorance.

Agree. Now what's really weird is that I also have a fascination with spiders so I am aware of what their benefits are and just how cool their nature is. Still doesn't stop that fear though.

Now I take offense to that!! lol. Snakes are quite, smooth, dry, and some just want to give you a hug. Of course I have to marry a woman who HATES...throw them in a blend and set fire to them....kinda bad. lol

Ooops!....Well sorry about that I have chilled out in my older age if I can see them I am ok, but if I stumble up on one there is two moments.....a bowel movement and a physical movement..Sh!t and run. I did pick up one last year and you are correct they are not slimy so maybe I will over come my fears someday. I think it started when I was in 7th grade in science class, I had a teacher that brought a hog nose snake to class for all of us to touch and hold as he told us about snakes. He came by my desk and said "Knowlton take a hold of the snake," puck dat. Well he didn't make me hold the snake he walked on by, but a little later he came back up behind me and just placed it across my shoulders......Holy Heather all hell broke loose then. There wasn't a desk left standing as I made my way to the door, I slung the snake off and it fell in a girls lap that started a chain reaction from hell......lol

I don't have a problem with snakes now but I remember coming home from school when I was 5. We lived at the very northern tip of NJ (very rural) and there was a garden snake curled up on the front steps. I could not bring myself to walk over it to go inside. I was completely frozen and the fear was overwhelming. I tried calling to my mom but she couldn't hear me. She finally came out about an hour later when she realized how late I was and carried me inside. I can see it in my head like it was yesterday.

We live in very old and gnarly woods in Florida called a "hammock" so I am very okay with spiders and snakes. The only animals that make for any concern are ones bigger than I am in the ocean when I am IN the ocean with them and, of course, certain humans. I wouldn't call it fear though. Mindfulness perhaps.

It can be argued that those who have no fear or give irrational "love" are the ignorant ones.

As if those two always go together? For some, it takes bodily threat for any kind of fear but I don't see them as necessarily doing the irrational love thing.

Also, anxiety is what most people have that they mistakenly label as fear or hate. If they articulated what they are anxious about, they might stand a change at seeing their fear or hate is an over-reaction on their part more than anything.

Yes, well, where I live they run them 10 at a time, and they disturb the peace, as well as stir up the air that, in turn, triggers allergy attacks for me. All that aside, I still don't like the darn things. Too noisy.... I like it quiet. I need to get a house on a quiet deadend road and buy a goat, I guess.

I know right, loud lawn mowers.... when the one we had was heading toward the blink, I tried to talk hubby into buyin a nice quiet rechargeable electric one. Then I quickly realized it was the only machine around the house he could mess with, so... maybe next year.

But I have to wonder about iroquis's kitty hate. What's up with that? I know they've been known to steal your breath when you sleep, but a simple closing of the bedroom door remedies that. They're cute and fluffy and squishy and I love them.

Yep. They are so cute. I lost one, just this week. :( Very sad. His brother is literally going crazy without him.

But to be fair, his brother was already crazy, jumping all over the deck chasing everything that moves, including his own tail. His claws are very sharp when he jumps on you from the sneak-up attack and scares the hell outta ya before you've even had coffee and a cigarette yet.

An average cat out of doors kills 10 songbirds daily. Yes, they are squishy.

About hate, it is a tool used as deflection in politics to distract populations under stress away from real issues. Conservatives (and churches) are masters of this manipulation. About a third of any population are very susceptiable to this tool, more in times of economic or social stress. It is also useful at consuming media time, preventing concious people from staying informed. Why can't Democrats figure out a way to tap that easy market?

I agree with you absolutely. However, if as a society we were more willing to open our hearts and a healthy dialogue, we would no longer be slaves to this blatantly obvious manipulation. I guess to some people it's easier to be a slave than to think for yourself. I'm not sure I can agree with you on it being on a third of the population. It seems like more, but maybe that's because most of them are here on the vine and I'm getting tons of fish in a small pool.

Bless you child! When speaking of the gay community you stated:

But didn’t God also say “judge not lest ye be judged?” and “do onto others as you would have done onto you?”

I have used those very facts every time I have argued in favor of the gay community...even at my (ex)church! And no, I am not gay. Very much married to my hubby of almost 20 years. But I have yet to see how their lifestyle affects mine or yours in any way!

    About the immigrants:

I call bull@!$%# on that one. If they get a paycheck, they pay taxes. If they purchase products, they pay taxes. If they register a vehicle, they pay taxes. What personal damage have you suffered at their hands? Is your fear, anger or sense of injury rational?

Once again, you take the words from my mouth! Like you, I also am against illegal immigration because of the illegality of it, but don't use the tired, old BS, people! Another one the peeves me off is when they say, "They are taking our welfare". "Until we change the laws for them to get it, go talk to the wall, cuz you are blaming the wrong entity", is what I want to tell them. (But they won't listen to me! LOL)

Personally, I hate mushrooms and spiders.

I hate spiders, mices and heights. Also anyone who screws over their mother 6 months after their dad dies. (Ok, that would be one person in particular...) And the Seattle Seahawks.

I do not believe gay marriage will affect me on any level so I refuse to waste my time hating gays. I do not hate Mexicans because my cousins are Mexican and so are my next-door neighbors. The only time I kill spiders is when I want to take a bath and one of them is dumb enough to be in the tub at the time.

I made this statement to illustrate the ridiculousness of what I perceive to be an emotion and state of mind that is running rampant in today's society. I actually have dogs and cats so I know that to be generally untrue. My entire opening paragraph was based on what I read on Newsvine every day and I tried to throw a bit of humor in there.
