Music Soothes the Savage Viner

The drive home from work today got me thinking about music. I love music. Not all of it mind you. But most of it. If I couldn't have it in my car I might go insane. I need to sing while I drive. And smoke. But that's a different article altogether. I belt it out when I drive. I drum on the steering wheel, I tap my braking foot (when I'm not braking, of course) and I move my body to the beat as best I can. When I don't know the words to a particular song I'll make up words that sound like whatever the singer sounds like. I probably look completely crazy to other drivers and they probably laugh at me but I don't care. If it wasn't for my music my tendency towards road rage would probably increase tenfold. I wonder about the other drivers I see when we're sitting at a light. They're mostly just sitting there. Are they embarrassed to do what I do? Are they just not musically inclined? I can't help but feel sorry for them. People...let it out. Enjoy one of the most wonderful inventions of man. Sing baby, sing!

So if you had to limit yourself to 5 performers (solo or band) what would they be? And what is your musical guilty pleasure?

Ugh, I hate admitting to my music choices.

I like whatever the newest song on the radio is, you know the one that they play every 20 minutes till you wanna kill yourself.

As far as groups go, I like Jason Mraz, Billy Joel, and Kesha.

My guilty pleasure is Neil Diamond.

Me too. :(

I know, I know, I'm a hipster douche bag. ugh

Ugh, I hate admitting to my music choices.

Why? Are you embarrassed? You like what you like. And they wouldn't be playing those songs every 20 minutes if a @!$%# load of other people didn't like them too. I also have to admit that I like some Miley Cyrus. Oh, that hurt.

I disagree about the radio. I think Elvis Costello said it best: "You either shut up or get cut up, they don't want to hear about it, it's only inches on the reel-to-reel. And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools trying to anaesthetise the way that you feel."

Are you embarrassed?

Sometimes, only when I am reminded by the yougster "hip" people that remind me how old and out of it I am. haha Not so much that I stop listening to what I like, though.

Actually I have a new favorite, Jack Johnson. I heard him, again, last night and really like him.

I just like music. With the exception of some/most 'Country' and some/most 'Classical' and most/all 'Rap' -- I like it all from many different time-frames.

Good for you. I used to be embarrassed by anything not rock and roll. Now I just go for it. The older I get the less I care about what other people think. Especially the youngsters. Been there, done that. I know exactly how much they really know, you know? Know 3 times in 1 sentence...how hip is that? :) I don't think I've heard of Jack Johnson...what kind of music?

I don't think I've heard of Jack Johnson...what kind of music?

He's from Hawaii and his music is pretty mellow with an islandy flavor to it. Here's my favorite of his, so far.

Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Blur, The Who, and The Beatles.

But really, if I were limited to just five, I couldn't see myself living for longer than a few months! I have a very ecclectic taste in music. If I tried to list every artist/ band in my music collection, at least half of Newsvine would say "wha?" and then stop talking to me, lol.

Wait... I'm a drummer in a band! So would I have to count my own band as one of the five? And if I did, but the band broke up, would I be down to four permanently? I think I'm on the cusp of an existential breakdown! :D

My tastes tend to be all over the place. Most of my friends won't even look through my music collection, lol. They go through the songs on my computer alphabetically and they're like "woah... you listen to Al Green, Bad Brains, the Chemical Brothers, the Wu Tang Clan, and Metallica? And who in the heck is this Fela Kuti guy? What's a "Tito Puente?" lol always fun to be had when someone dives through my music collection!

I can only really nail down four. I keep changing my mind on the 5th one.

I'd want Journey's Infinity, The Beatles White Album, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Foo Fighter's In Your Honor (double CD there), but number 5....I don't know. Too many others that I love. Something modern, like Maroon 5 or Radiohead? Something classic like Led Zepplin? 70's Jackson Brown or Kansas? 80's - and my personal guilty pleasure - Duran Duran?

        I don't know....I just can't decide.

Do you mean auto-tune as an effect, like Kanye West uses in some songs, or do you mean auto-tune as in the basic pitch-correction software that fixes singing to make it hit the right notes?

A company called Antares produces software called auto-tune. It identifies the notes of singing or an instrument, and then you can tell it the key and note you want that piece of song to actually be. The software then corrects the note to be the one you want. But you can also set a wildly different note several keys away, and in attempting to stretch the voice to that point, you end up with a wacky effect (like the one in this funny video about Kanye West). Here's how regular VST pitch correction works.

Digital recording has brought about a number of major changes. Later today, my band will be working on our album. We bought all of the equipment and software we needed for a little less than $5,000, and we're getting professional sound quality. Twenty years ago, we'd get similar quality in a professional multi-million dollar recording studio! It's incredible what computers can do these days :)

Thanks, Matt, that's incredible. I'll check out the links right now.

Even though that's not my generation, I actually like listening to that computer-voice effect as in Kanye West; I guess I hadn't considered it as a correction, but just more of an effect.

Really, it isn't a correction or an effect, but a "correcting-effect;" technically it makes corrections, but that's what most software effects do, really. In other words, adding a compression effect corrects noise problems. Adding reverb corrects the "dry" sound. And fuzz/ distortion pedals correct lameness! :D lol

I get that these modifications need to get done Matt, but it's frustrating when you like a record (yes I said record!) and then go hear that band live. Frankly, most of them suck. U2 is the best live band I've heard. Bono's voice is amazing! I couldn't tell the difference between live and memorex. And Springsteen actually sounds better live. And let me be the first to say it..."that's not so hard to do in his case." :) Are you picking up what I'm laying down brother?

There are very few bands who both (a) have a large catalog and (b) have never released anything really bad. There are a lot of people I'm really excited about right now (that haven't been around long enough to measure durability), a lot of people who never made a bad record (but only made one or two), and a lot of bands who made really great records in a career that involves more wasted time than fertile time. There are lots of ways to go with this question. If it is a question of consistency, and what makes me so excited to just hear - even if I pick an album at random - I have to say:

              • The Flaming Lips
              • They Might Be Giants
              • Talking Heads
              • Man... Or Astro-Man?

That is a difficult question. 5.

I'll have to say that the 5 I choose now would not be the 5 I would choose at some other moment in time and space.

                That being declared:

                1. The Drive By Truckers

                2. Reckless Kelly

                3. Warren Zevon

                4. Gillian Welch

                5. Oh Susanah

Doesn't everyone sing in their car? I'll listen, and sing along to just about anything as long as I'm alone in the car.

Referencing your title, have you eer noticed that you're more tame writing comments while listening to soothing music?

Eh, I'm a hippy chick can't limit myself ever to five. But I will say this, my driving music is definitely G Love. My "I'm about to go full on road rage so pull me back song," is "Astronaut" Hit it G!

I need to sing while I drive. And smoke. But that's a different article altogether.

Hmm, I should probably wait for that article *grins!* but ehh, whatever. I recall sitting in a car *smokin* (thankfully we were parked) and listening to The Necromancer by Rush. My buddy had an awesome system - Alpine, I think not sure about the speakers, but I know he had a sub-woofer, anyways the quality was amazing, and since I was all of 16, the *smoke* had a much more profound effect as well :)

Well, to bring it back to this article... my 5 fave anti-roadrage albums, and a shout out to my high school peers on that tip.

Great article... FR sent, I want in on that next article ;~)

                    #5 - Metallica's "Garage Days Re-Revisited"

                    #3 - Couch Flambeau's "Ghostride"

                    #2 - Slayer's "Reign in Blood"

Ok, and fellow Sheboyganites, Morbid Saint as promised.

PS - I listen to many different kinds of music, especially when driving, so please don't overlook my "anti-roadrage" qualifier for this list, lol.

Well, on our vacations from NY to NM...the majority of people would have thought my daughter and I were nuts!!

We sang loud & proud to Melissa Ethridge. (Um, we drove!)

She is still my traveling music of choice.

Others: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sophie B Hawkins, Eminem and Matchbox 20....now, I need to add a few more, because 5 doesn't cut it! Goo Goo Dolls, John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan & Springsteen.

Guilty pleasure: toss up between Barry Manilow & Neil Diamond...I love Neil, but, for some reason I know every dang Manilow song!

Wow! That's pretty quick for such a long journey. I'm guessing you didn't do much sight seeing along the way. I love road trips, but I don't know if I'd survive that one:)

No, not much..but, we did plenty in the 5 days we were in NM. Did it three years in a row, that's what made me decide to move here...well, that, NY winters and my arthritis! LOL

Very nice, but too hot! I love visiting Carlsbad, and stopping by White Sands on the way home. I'm from up north originally. Last time we made that road trip, my wife's grandma was with us, and wanted to listen to some Spanish on the radio. (She doesn't speak a word of English) So we spent way more time listening to norteño ballads than can be considered humane;)

Nah- not too hot...while the north and west parts of the state are expecting a blizzard, we'll be 68!

We only had two days above 100 this year...however, my parents only had one day in the 90's and most in the 60's-70's all summer in NY.

I'll take the dry heat over the gray and rain any day! ;-)

My favorite song for dealing with traffic is "I pray for you". We have an unfair share of stupid drivers in good ole Cincy and belting out that song just makes me laugh.

If we're speaking specifically of driving music, my five favorites artists are: Neu!, Turzi, Front 242, Turing Machine, and Sunn O))).

If I'm of a mind to sing while driving, I might throw on, say, Sugar, Husker Du, Bill Rieflin or Peter Murphy. Or Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, if my wife isn't riding along (she doesn't love SGM, though she admires their musicianship).

Guilty car listening pleasure? Tenacious D.
